Hey Pono Ayyeeee
Back in the 90's Disney Channel played some real shit about role models. Smarthouse was about a nerdy boy who tries to win a smarthouse for his family to replace the mother he lost. The Color of Friendship was about the integration of blacks into white schools. The best of these inspiring movies is Johnny Tsunami. A Hawaiian surfer has to relocate to Vermont due to his dad's job in the military. The movie is basically is what originated bossness. The theme of the movie is "Go big or go home," in true boss style. Johnny could have soldout and been a preppy skiier but he chose to remain an Urchin and snowboard his way to bossness. The movie is more about surfing or skiing however. Its about a young adult realizing his indepence, that he can do what he wants when he wants. Whoever told you there were only 24 hours in a day lied to you, slap them in the face. The world is what you make it, be awesome and awesome things happen you just have to open to it.

I do not remember the Disney Channel playing anything worthwhile and definitely did not supply the world with any role models. i really did not understand where the last sentence had any major correlation to Johnny Tsunami. Better luck next time.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of torn about this one. I think that it has potential in that 90's Disney Channel as a spring board for an essay has potential to be interesting. However, as a stand-alone, this doesn't exactly work for me-- it's not "big enough" to work as an independent piece. However, I like the idea, and I hope you do more with it.
ReplyDeleteI think you should work more with humor. Instead of just giving a description of the movies "Smarthouse" and "The Color of Friendship", describe them, make fun of them. I remember seeing smarthouse, there is so much to make fun of in that and if you are going to talk about role models then describe how simple and consistently the same, all of the role models in each disneychannel film is. What a disney role model consists of and why you think Johnny is more boss then any of the others.
ReplyDeleteAha--the origin of "bossness" revealed! An interesting critique but a little light on the details of the film. Tell us more, Boss. Proofread, etc. ("indepence"?)
